Reasons to buy

+Rich colors and contrast+Object Tracking Sound works well+Impressive 4K upscaling+Tizen TV is as smart as it gets

Reasons to avoid

No Dolby Vision support

The Samsung Q80T QLED 4K TV is as impressive as ever, thanks to quantum-dot enhanced picture, clever smart features and impressive Object Tracking Sound. We love the excellent color quality and HDR performance, though you will have to accept that Samsung TVs don’t offer Dolby Vision support. Powered by Samsung’s latest powerful Quantum processor, the Q80t is also formidable on the smart TV features, with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant in addition to Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant.

And while it’s not Samsung’s most premium 4K smart TV, it’s really, really close. The only real differences between the Q80T and the more expensive Samsung Q90T QLED TV is that the Q80T has it’s ports on the TV, instead of a separate box – well, that and a couple hundred dollars in the purchase price.

The TCL 5 Series Roku TV does what TCL does best, delivering a surprisingly great mix of features and performance at an excellent affordable price. With even the largest model selling for less than $1000, you get the superb color and brightness of QLED, as well as Roku’s user-friendly smart TV interface, which puts thousands of apps right at your fingertips.

In addition to the excellent color accuracy and full color gamut offered by the QLED display, it offers top-of-the-line HDR support, with Dolby Vision in addition to basic HDR10 and HLG formats. With input lag clocking in at 13.1 milliseconds, it’s also one of the best affordable gaming TVs you can buy. And it’s roughly half the price of Samsung’s equivalent QLED TV, making it one of the best values in smart TVs.

Konka U5 Android TV (55U55A) review

8. Best budget Android TV: Konka U5 Android TV (55U55A)

Android TV for less

Specifications

Available Screen Sizes: 43, 50, 55, 65, 75 inches

Screen Type: LCD

Refresh Rate: 60 Hz

HDMI ports: 4

Size: 48.4 x 28 x 2.4 inches

Weight: 28 pounds

Reasons to buy

+Good brightness and color+Android TV with Google Assistant+Plenty of ports

Reasons to avoid

Poor contrastTerrible sound

The Konka U5 Android TV may not come from a well-known manufacturer, but if you’re after an affordable 4K TV with the great Android smart TV interface, then Konka offers great color and brightness and a full featured smart experience for a budget-friendly price.

For a TV that sells for such low prices, the U5 delivers better performance than we expected, with rich colors and good brig htness compared to other TVs in the price range. Contrast could have been better, and the sound quality will definitely benefit from adding a soundbar, but it’s more than serviceable for watching TV and movies, and short lag times make for a decent gaming experience. The Android TV platform may run a little slowly on the U5, but the rich app selection, built in Google Assistant and Chromecast capabilities and plenty of smart home compatibility easily outweigh the minor lag we saw in our testing.

Insignia 4K Ultra HD Fire TV Edition NS-55DF710NA21 review

9. Best Amazon Fire TV: Insignia Fire TV Edition (2020 model)

A 4K bargain with Alexa built-in

Specifications

Available Screen Sizes: 43, 50, 55, 65, 70 inches

Screen Type: LCD

Refresh Rate: 60 Hz

HDMI ports: 3 HDMI, 1 USB

Size: 48.9 x 28.6 x 3.3 inches

Weight: 29.3 pounds

Reasons to buy

+Responsive Fire TV OS+Alexa brings lots of tools and smart home integration+Wide sound

Reasons to avoid

Less than accurate colorsPoor contrast

The Insignia 4K Fire TV Edition (2020 model) may grab your attention with super-low prices during sales events, but it’s also the best smart TV around for people who want the convenience of Alexa and streaming services in a single package. With 4K resolution, HDR support with Dolby Vision and Amazon’s huge library of apps and content, the real selling point of the Insignia Fire TV isn’t any one feature, but the total package of smart capabilities that are offered in this ultra-affordable TV.

It’s a great TV for casual viewing, but the mediocre performance and middling gaming support make it clear that (at least in this case) you get what you pay for. Fire TV is great for the Amazon faithful, but new-comers may find it a little too Amazon-centric. But it’s hard to beat the price on a regular day, nevermind the low prices offered in every big sales event.

10. Best Hisense 4K TV: Hisense U8G Android TV

A great Android TV

Specifications

Available Screen Sizes: 55, 65 inches

Screen Type: LCD with Quantum dot

Refresh Rate: 120 Hz

HDMI ports: 4 (2 HDMI 2.1, 2 HDMI 2.0)

Size: 57.1 x 33.1 x 4.1 inches

Weight: 53.4 pounds

Reasons to buy

+Very bright+Excellent sharpness, color and contrast+Low lag time

Reasons to avoid

Overactive motion smoothingMediocre viewing angles

The Hisense U8G Android TV is our favorite 4K smart TV from Hisense, and one of the best Android TVs around. With a quantum dot color and integrated Chromecast and Google Assistant, it’s a full-featured smart TV that offers great quality for a reasonable price. With support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, it also offers the best HDR format support you can find, along with excellent Dolby Atmos sound. It has room-listening microphones for built-in voice control, effectively letting you use the TV as a smart speaker, and offering the sort of smart home integration and control that would normally cost much more.

In our review, we were especially impressed by the U8G’s 700+ nits of peak brightness and how it combines with the better-than-average HDR support for great performance that brings out highlights and shadows. With few complaints and lots of great perks, the Hisense U8G Android TV is easily our new favorite Hisense model.

LG GX OLED TV review

11. Best home theater OLED: LG GX OLED TV

A premium OLED with stunning design

Specifications

Available Screen Sizes: 55, 65, 77 inches

Screen Type: OLED

Refresh Rate: 120 Hz

HDMI ports: 4 HDMI 2.1, 2 USB

Size: 56.9 x 32.7 x 0.9 inches

Weight: 63.9 pounds

Reasons to buy

+Stunningly thin design+Great wide-angle viewing+Reliable webOS smart TV platform

Reasons to avoid

Similar lab scores as cheaper LG CX OLEDStand not included

The LG GX OLED is among the mo st premium TVs on this list, with a high-end price tag and a 20-millimeter thick design that’s ready-made for wall mounting that looks better than many custom installations. The TV’s sleek, flush-mount design is a big part of the high price tag, but it also boasts superb viewing angles and the best sound of any LG OLED TV we’ve reviewed.

But for all the polish and panache of the GX OLED, it doesn’t have better picture than the less expensive (but equally excellent) LG CX OLED. But if you want all of that superb quality and full-featured smart TV capability in a truly premium design, then the LG GX OLED is worth the higher cost of admission, making a statement that will have you bringing everyone into your home theater just to gawk at the TV on the wall.

SunBriteTV Pro 2 Outdoor TV review

12. SunBriteTV Pro 2 Outdoor TV

Best outdoor TV for all conditions

Specifications

Available Screen Sizes: 49, 55, 65 inches

Screen Type: LCD

Refresh Rate: 60 Hz

HDMI ports: 2

Size: 45.1 x 26.9 x 4.8 inches

Weight: 84 pounds

Reasons to buy

+Solid 4K picture with basic HDR+Rugged outdoor design with internal climate control

Reasons to avoid

ExpensiveNo built in audio or smart functions

The average TV isn’t made to handle rain, snow, dust or heat. But the SunBriteTV Pro 2 outdoor TV is built for those conditions, with a rugged design that can withstand the elements. Whether it’s in a cold garage or out on an open porch, the weather-sealed chassis fends off precipitation, dirt and bugs, and even has a sealed compartment for HDMI hookups. The screen is made to be viewed in full sunlight conditions where even other outdoor sets would falter.

With basic HDR capability and strong overall performance, the SunBriteTV  is great for any outdoor setting. And with optional weatherproof soundbar or speakers you can enjoy sound that’s just as tough. If you want a great set for your yard, this is the best TV to get for outdoor viewing.

How to choose the best 4K TV for you

When it comes to finding a great TV, the best advice is to find the TV that meets your budget, and has the features you want. From smart functions to port selection, we offer plenty of advice in our TV buying guide, which explains the ins and outs of features like HDR, different types of display, and even extended warranties. And if you still have questions about smart TV features and capabilities, check out Smart TVs: Everything you need to know.

For the best picture, we recommend getting a set that offers high dynamic range (HDR) support. HDR10 is the base standard, while Dolby Vision is a higher-caliber format, and we recommend opting for Dolby Vision support when you have the choice.

Port selection is another chief concern. More HDMI ports will let you connect more devices, like game consoles and satellite boxes. And if you have a soundbar, you’ll want to connect it using an HDMI port with eARC.

Finally, you’ll want to find a smart TV platform that you like. Companies like Samsung and LG use their own proprietary software, but many use more broadly available software, like Android or Roku TV.

According to our guide What size TV should you buy?, you’ll want to position the TV roughly the same distance from the TV as the diagonal measurement of the screen size – 50 inches from a 50-inch TV, 65 inches from a 65-inch TV, and so on.

You can expect to pay about $500 for a good budget 55-inch 4K TV. And at least $900 for a 65-inch model. Models with better picture, speakers and features will cost more, and premium 65-inch TVs often cost $2,000 or more.

How we test 4K TVs

Evaluating TVs is about more than just kicking back to watch a movie. That’s why every TV we review is put through a rigorous testing process that measures key standards of picture quality and performance.

We lab test every TV, measuring color gamut, color accuracy and brightness to objectively see which sets are the best for these key indicators. We also test for lag time – a key detail for gaming – measuring to the millisecond how long it takes for content to travel from the original source to the screen. We use these results to make numbers-based comparisons about color and display quality.

We also spend time with each set for real-world evaluation and see how our lab results translate into more subjective performance. We also compare sets side by side and view samples from the latest movies, specialized test patterns that highlight strengths and weaknesses of each display, and a range of content across several sources. With that information, we can tell you which TVs look best, sound best and offer the best viewing experience.

Finally, we evaluate the smart TV functions and apps for each TV, looking at everything from the remote control design to the voice interaction and app store selection. This gives us a good feel for the navigation and ease of use on the TV, and lets us meaningfully discuss which smart TVs may be better or worse than others.

Want something in a particular size? We’ve got you covered. See our favorites, big and small:
